Assessment is increasingly a reality in higher education as accreditors, the federal government, and other stakeholders demand concrete measures of student success. Many colleges continue to struggle to find ways to develop effective assessment systems that: (1) engage educators and students and (2) lead to robust and useful results. The aim is to use those results to stimulate dialogue about how to address patterns of weakness in student performance through pedagogy, instruction, educational practices, and the redesign of curricula and co-curricular programs.


On Thursday, January 20, at 1 p.m. Eastern [Noon, Central Time], Peggy Maki, a leading national consultant on assessment, will lead an audio conference on these issues.


Among the topics she will cover:


Perspectives on national assessment issues
Proposed responses to national trends— some missing elements in the assessment process.
Elements of a collaborative, problem-based framework to assess student learning
How to keep everyone informed – on campus and off – in ways that provide necessary information without creating panic.
How to develop open-ended research questions focused on teaching and learning
A case study that exemplifies a collaborative, problem-based approach.
How to produce robust and useful results from assessment.


The program will feature a 30-minute presentation and a 30-minute question-and-answer period. The entire program will last one hour.

About the presenter:


Peggy Maki, one of the leading national experts on assessment, has conducted more than 470 seminars, workshops, and keynotes on the topic at campuses in the United States and abroad. Previously, she served as director of assessment and senior scholar at the American Association for Higher Education; professor of English and linguistics for 20 year, as dean and vice president; and associate director of New England’s accrediting body, the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. She has written widely on assessment. Her most recent book, the second edition of Assessing for Learning: Building a Sustainable Commitment Across the Institution, published by Stylus in November.
